The transition to raising young children is not something that anyone can truly prepare for you. Your world changes, and the child comes first. Babies let you know when they want something, and they don’t have the grace to be patient. The emotion of a child crying is not an accident, because without the care of another, a human baby cannot survive.
One of the biggest challenges that comes with caring for a newborn is sleeping and settling down. Many new parents struggle to settle, and no matter how you feed, change or swallow your baby, nothing seems to work. In this article we will discuss sleep and rest in detail. But before we start, it is important to know that no one can put a baby to sleep. The tips below and those within the Baby Sleep Guide are meant to be a guide, however it is up to you to create patterns and strategies that work for you, your family and your baby.
Why do some children have trouble sleeping?
Many children have trouble sleeping at times. A major UK study found that almost two in three parents have lied about their child’s sleep patterns in the past. The main reason for lying is that parents see their sleepless child as a reflection of their parenting skills. It’s unfortunate that parents feel the need to lie, but if two-thirds of families have a problem with their children’s sleep, then maybe restless sleep is a phenomenon.
But why is that so? Mainly because babies are still growing. Young children cannot regulate their own body temperature, which is essential for human sleep. Worse, babies can’t get their food without help, they can’t control strong emotions, and they don’t know the importance of sleep. This adds to the fact that sleep problems in children are very common, and they are unusual.
So what can we do to help children sleep?
Some parents may be tempted to expect big things from their baby, like going to bed and sleeping when they are tired! But some babies, depending on who they are, may need more help to relax and settle down to sleep than others. During the first three to four months, babies can grow rapidly, and need attention and comfort from an adult. If you are struggling to settle your baby then you can try:
– Strong shaking, or hugging, or both
– The sound of Shh-ing, like a baby hears when it is in the womb
– Using a sling
– Walking in a pram
– Feed your baby or give him a dummy to suck
Whatever you offer, remember that your child may respond at some times and not at others. Having a few tricks up your sleeve is the best way to calm a fussy child if the strategies aren’t going well. Our baby sleep guide covers everything from sleep quality, swaddling, safety and more.
Children’s sleep is stable in the 21st century
Your baby’s sleep schedule can be one of the most difficult parts of being a new parent. Especially for those who grew up in today’s world, it can be difficult to find advice and support that really helps your family. Unfortunately, this leaves many new parents turning to the internet for advice, and most of it doesn’t provide the information we need.
The internet has a lot of advice and answers, but it often depends on what you expect from a baby’s sleep. Counseling can be helpful, but it can also be a hindrance where conflicting counseling can be confusing. Similarly, advice from friends is good, but it may not suit every style or your child’s needs.
In the end, this makes sleep and sleep more difficult than before. But the truth is that they are the same. Your child’s genetic makeup and experiences make him unique, and it informs his sleep habits. This means it’s okay to seek advice from online parenting courses and get advice from friends, but make sure it’s something that works for your family. If you accept that advice you thinking won’t work, chances are your instincts are right.
Babysits babies and toddlers to help them sleep
Touch is one of the primary ways we communicate with each other. Babies born in the womb are constantly in contact with their mother’s muscles and tissues, and their bodies are used to the little touches.
Skin-to-skin contact after birth is recommended as the best form of bonding between parents and their baby. It makes sense that babies often respond to massage because it builds on what they are used to. And small children who are used to being massaged as babies find it enjoyable.
Why Baby and Toddler Massages Are So Good
Massage appears to reduce levels of stress hormones in restless babies. Skin-to-skin contact also appears to improve baby health, increase weight gain in premature babies, ease crying and help bond between mother and baby.
It is worth noting that there is no current evidence to prove that massaging babies has any effect on the growth or development of children.

How to Change Your Baby or Toddler
Remember, there is no right way to massage. The important thing is to be calm and listen to your child’s responses. Expect your toddler to be more relaxed and fussy than an infant.
– Ask your child’s permission first before massaging them. Even though they may not understand what you are saying, they will listen to your words. Asking for consent is also a respectful way to acknowledge your child’s rights over his or her body.
– Choose a time when you are both calm and happy. Make sure you are not in a hurry to be somewhere and you can focus on your child.
– Choose a safe and stable place to massage your baby. A changing table/mat, bed, cot or floor are good options.
– Prepare by heating the room or choosing a warm place in your house, so that your child does not get cold. Choose a room that has filtered light and is free from rain.
– Lay out a few towels for your baby to lie on and massage or use vegetable oil. Avoid using peanut oil if allergic.
– Remove jewelry and warm your hands. Apply a little oil or massage between your hands. Take a deep, relaxing breath and try to be ‘in the moment’ with your little one.
– Put on some relaxing music or something that will add to the excitement you are trying to create.
– Lay your child on the back or front; It doesn’t matter what we start with.
– undress your child; even let them sleep until you drag them by their legs to the ground.
– Start at their feet using gentle strokes to massage the muscles with their toes. Be aware that some babies have wobbly feet and do not find foot massages enjoyable.
– Use strong, continuous strokes with your whole hand if you can. Your palm or fingers are fine too.
– Try to lift your legs, using both hands to stroke them long, like you would pet a cat. While lifting one hand, place the other on top of their leg, and walk down to their feet.
– Lower their stomach gently, straight. Cycle their legs and lift their knees slowly up to their chest and back down.
– Hit your child’s hands and arms with long, continuous strokes.
– You can also massage your baby’s face, using the pads of your fingers to move around the eyes and mouth.
– Turn your baby to the other side and repeat the massage steps.
