There are many variables when it comes to painters, which I was reminded of when I asked a contractor, “How much will it cost to finish my basement?” She wisely replied, “How much would it cost to buy a dress? As there are tons of prices for dresses and repairs, you can find newborn baby designers in DC from the $500 – $5,000 ranges!”
When shopping for a dress for a special occasion, you’ll want to know the type of fabric, fit, stitching, and how it will hold up over time. If it’s time to build your home, you’ll no doubt ask about the contractor’s background and read reviews of new equipment before ordering. Likewise, when it comes time to find a baby photographer, here’s a handy checklist to help you with this once-in-a-lifetime experience:
1) Read the article I recently wrote about how to choose a baby photographer as a starting point.
2) Check out the portfolios of several budding artists within 1-2 hours of your home.
3) Check for focus and clarity: Can you read each subject’s eyebrows in each photo? It’s amazing how many times I see “professional” photographers give their clients photos that look terrible when blown up and displayed as wall art!
4) Are there soft transitions between highlights and shadows? Images are a 2-dimensional representation of three subjects. To perceive depth in only two dimensions, light and shadow are used. This helps the brain to understand the reality within the image and provide effective information about the image. Some photographers use “flat” lighting, which shows little or no depth. Some artists put so much emphasis on their artistic shadows that it is difficult to recognize the baby. Find a photographer whose use of light and shadow pleases your eye.
5) What is the difference in each part? How many arrangements will the artist prepare? Nobody wants a dozen pictures of a baby sleeping on a gray blanket in slightly different colors! You’ll want to find out how much the photographer can do to make sure you get the most beautiful pictures of your baby!
