Have you been Googling things like:
“comfortable breast pump to wear”
“Why don’t I get milk when I pump”
“non-dissolving breast pump”
If so, you are in the right place. I get questions like this ALL THE TIME from women I work with. And to be honest, clothing is new to the breastfeeding world and many experts are still trying to figure out how to navigate it.
Most of the advice you can get focuses on:
color comparisons
absorb energy
“Top 10 pump” list
This is helpful, but there are some things that are rarely discussed – but I always consider them to be the secrets of IBCLCs who work in lactation, especially those:
Two women can use it the pump itself and have completely different results
Although they are popular pumps that seem to work well for many. For example, almost all of my customers who use the Eufy S1 Pro love it, but for me? It didn’t work very well.
So what’s the difference? Maybe it’s not your food. It’s not that your body “doesn’t respond to pumping.” Maybe it’s not just a “bad pump”.
It can be a method of absorption.
Why Your Breast Pump Isn’t Working
If your breast pump isn’t working as well as you’d hoped, it’s easy to think:
Sometimes the flange size needs to be adjusted. Maybe you’re pumping too much or too low. But most of the time, what actually happens is this: The pump you are using is not compatible with the system your body will get used to getting rid of milk.
Your body will adjust to its tone and rhythm, either:
When you switch to an outfit with a completely different pattern, your body doesn’t respond the same way.
What is a Suction Pattern?
Every breast pump uses a combination of:
Our bodies are creatures of habit, and can begin to associate these signals with milk production.
So when mom says:
“My pump is not responding”
What I see most of the time is they don’t respond that chart, especially if they are used extensively for breastfeeding or use some type of pump.
Why This Matters About Wearable Breast Pumps
Wearable breast pumps are designed differently than traditional pumps.
Most are:
But it often means:
This is why many women notice a drop in the pump and wear pumps and feel as if they are not “empty”.
As I mentioned before, it is different from normal pumps, so this change may be difficult for some women.
3 Ways to Breastfeed (And How to Know Yours)
This is what I came up with – it is not a scientific method or developed through extensive research. My experience and thoughts!
⚡ Fast + Light
(Stop fast, continuous, slow)
It sounds like:
You can best answer if:
you get frustrated easily
you don’t need much suction
Your baby will suck faster, faster
💪 Slow + Strong
(Longer pulls, more space between)
It sounds like:
deep, very strong
visible breathing
many “machines” in parts
You can best answer if:
you have to suck it hard
light pumps feel ineffective
you rely on deep drafts to fall
🔄 Depending on the Rhythm
(Layered, flexible, “shake”)
It sounds like:
clear form (short + long)
“rocking” or wave-like music
constant stimulation
You can best answer if:
You depend on changing modes
smooth or continuous will not work well
your body responds in sequence
Early Pumps and the Suction Model
This is one of the easiest ways to find out what works for your body and decide what to wear.
So, for starters, think about the pump that you answered well:
⚡ Fast + Light
💪 Slow + Strong
🔄 Depending on the Rhythm
Medela Symphony
Ameda Platinum
If You Often Nurse…
If your child drinks a lot, your body will get used to it quickly, obeying the law
So many women should start with Speed + Light.
But if this doesn’t work:

Now, let’s get into what you’ve been looking for: the clothes that would be perfect for you. I went through all these dresses and tried to play carefully with the fit, length, and tone. Again, not an exact science, but I feel like this was pretty accurate. From these groups, look at additional features, price, sound, and appearance to make a decision.
⚡ Quick + Light Clothes
(Constant, fast, slow standing)
👉 Good for:
simple respondents
especially nursing mothers
regular availability
💪 Slow + Strong Clothes
(Longer pull, more distance, deeper discharge)
If it helps, these are two of my favorite pumps and my body responds well too. I breastfeed my son and historically I only have meh milk.
👉 Good for:
🔄 Clothes Based on Rhythm
(Structured, flexible, sustainable)

Why Some Clothes Work – And Others Don’t
There are many reasons why your dressing may not respond as you expect. When it comes to breastfeeding incompatibility, here’s what happens:
How To Increase Your Milk Supply With A Breast Pump
If your outfit doesn’t fit:
1. Compare your plan
Choose a pump that mimics what already works with your baby or another pump
2. Pay attention to breathing
Another breath = more exhalation
Less breathing = more stimulation
3. Try different colors
Some pumps fall into several categories based on their settings
4. Be careful
As tempting as it is to just throw on a dress and hope for the best, you have to pay attention in the beginning to hear what your body is doing. This may look like removing it from time to time and playing around a lot with the settings until you find the right combination of:
Questions About Wearable Breast Pumps
Why am I not getting a lot of milk with my breast pump?
Most of the time, it’s not what you give – it’s that the shape of the pump doesn’t match what your body responds to.
Do breast pumps not work well?
It can be, especially for women who need strong or steady stimulation – but the right match can work well.
Can a breast pump reduce milk production?
If it is not removing the milk properly, it can affect the availability of the period. In most cases, it is recommended that you consider a wearable pump as your second option.
Why do we have to change?
Look at what your body already responds to – your baby or your first pump – and choose to wear a similar model.
Down Under
There is no “best pump to wear” for everyone and your body responds to design, not color
So if your pump isn’t working… It doesn’t mean it’s a bad pump, and it doesn’t mean your body is the problem.
You may need a better match.
