Newborn babies often do not sleep through the night. Their little tummies usually only need one or two feedings a night until they are six months old.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t start teaching them how to sleep, starting tonight! In today’s video, I have tips to help you set a schedule, get into a bedtime routine, and start your baby off on the right foot to encourage enough sleep from day one.
– Hi, I’m Dana, welcome to this week’s video.
Today, I want to share with you a few tips, my three favorite tips for getting your baby to sleep well. It is possible. You can definitely guide your baby down the right path to naturally develop the ability to sleep. You won’t have to sleep to teach them later. You don’t have to bootcamp them afterwards. You can only encourage and it is wonderful and if you are the one who is expecting a new baby or you have a new baby, I will save you a lot of pain that many people wait for months before starting to take any kind of steps in the right way.
So the first and most important thing is that newborn babies do not have a high tolerance for being awake. They have a lot of hard work and most of it is done while they sleep. So a newborn baby can tolerate about 45 minutes of time before falling asleep again and let me tell you that I wish with all my wishes that I knew I had my first child.
I tell you, it would have saved me a lot of grief. This was a baby that would stay awake for hours as he continued to grow and I fed and fed and fed. Oh, gosh, I wish I knew.
So that includes mealtime. So if you feed your baby in 30 minutes, spend a little time playing, maybe tummy time or go play with other siblings or just hold hands and look at your watch and when it’s 45 minutes, you will try to put your baby to sleep and you want to catch them before they start shaking.
Crankiness is very tired and often, crankiness is mistaken for hunger again, right? You’re thinking to yourself, it’s only been an hour and a half, why is he shaking, I think he needs to eat and it’s because he’s tired, he missed the window and now he’s tired because he’s so tired, so tired.
So, I would encourage you, keep an eye on the clock. Every 45 minutes throughout your day, a child has a chance to sleep. Now, it can be in your hands. Absolutely it can. There is nothing sweeter than having a newborn sleeping in your arms. I wouldn’t take that away from you.
Sometimes, try to take them down before bed. That’s number two.
You want to encourage your toddler to develop other skills that don’t depend on extra help from you. You want him to learn what to do to calm himself down and go to sleep and if you have the right time and put him in the bassinet, he will surprise you, sometimes. You go to fold the laundry, you will come back and look at him and he is sleeping soundly and you will see that it is a victory because he is, sorry, he is on the way to learning the art of sleeping and that is the main reason why a child sleeps well because they start to make themselves.
They begin to figure out how to sleep without a bottle in their mouth, without a breast in their mouth, without a pacifier in their mouth, without rocking, rocking, rocking. They learn to do this on their own and that is the key to getting a good night’s sleep.
Another thing you want to remember, thirdly, I want to encourage you to put your baby to sleep in the place where he sleeps at night.
Now I understand, you like to be around him or you want him to be with your family but sleep is sleep. I mean we are not unconscious when we sleep. So to encourage him to sleep longer, let him go to his sleeping area and make his sleeping place unless you are out or in the carrier, that’s fine, but if you are at home and trying to sleep, put him in the same place where he sleeps at night.
Most of the time when he goes there, his body and his brain go together with the idea that I should go to this place to sleep and this will help you get off to a good start.
Thank you so much for watching today. Sleep well.
