Your Guide to DIY Mother’s Day

It’s finally May. The flowers are blooming, the birds are singing, and the weather is getting warmer. It’s a nice distraction from all the anxiety and stress we’ve been dealing with over the past few weeks related to COVID-19. But you know what else is coming? Mother’s Day! And that means buying gifts. Did you know that consumers spend? $25 billion on Mother’s Day?! Wow! That’s a lot of flowers and spa gift cards. But did you also know that a survey of moms found that a clean house or a good night’s sleep is at the top of the list of most requested gifts? So, instead of wasting a lot of money on things your mom (or wife, daughter, or friend) doesn’t need, show her how much you care with these DIY Mother’s Day ideas:

Write a Mother’s Day Letter

Life, on a good day, is full of responsibilities, tasks, and activities. The days are long but the years are short and sometimes we lose perspective. If there’s a new (or experienced) mom in your life, she might be too tired to remember the little things. Or even worse is that they feel as if they are not respected for the efforts they have made quietly in giving birth and raising their children. Write them a reminder letter. Remind them how strong they were during labor and delivery. Share memories of how their loving touch calmed their crying baby. Show her that you appreciate her sacrifices to be a loving and devoted mother. Sometimes we need confirmation of what we have done, to remind ourselves that we are doing well. A heartfelt Mother’s Day letter is the perfect way to do that.

Get Everyone Out of the House (Employed Mom)

Okay, I know this one is hard, especially since we have to be so far away. But there are some safe things you can do outside of the house to give moms some time off. Take the kids on a hike or hike. If you can’t leave the house, plan to give the women in your life as much space as possible. For example, if he wants to be in the yard, you and the kids play in the house.

Print Some Family Photos

Ever since the invention of cell phones, we have all become amateur photographers. Mindlessly taking pictures of everything in our lives. Which can be very memorable and fun. But you know what we don’t do anymore? Print the pictures. And what’s the fun in that? As a Mother’s Day gift, consider chronicling her journey to (and beyond) motherhood. There are many online printing services where you can upload your photos and have them sent to you. This way you can maintain your social media presence and still have a thoughtful gift. Win-win.

Take His Place

Now, I don’t mean to remove her from her role as a mother, but I mean to do her duties. If you only live with your mother or your wife/partner/sister who is a mother, then you should take the tasks that she likes to do. Women, even in 2020, still do most of the housework. So, take it upon yourself to wash the dishes, do the laundry, make a grocery list and go shopping, wash the bathroom floor, etc.
