10 Best Family Photo Spots Around Boston (Parks, Beaches & City Centers)

Hi there! If you’ve been following along, you know I’m a big fan of home episodes. There is something special about photographing your family in a place where your daily life takes place. But I also love getting out and about in this beautiful city with families looking for a Boston destination, whether it’s a park, a beach, or a beautiful city block.

One of the questions I get asked the most is, “Isabel, where should we take our family photos?” So I put together my favorite family photo spots around Boston. These are some of the parks, beaches, and corners of the city that I return to again and again because they capture the best of every season and because they give your family plenty of space to relax, play, and just be alone and capture it all.

If you want to see more about how the family and I part works, from the styling to the final painting, I have the details there. For now, let’s talk about places!

1. Boston Public Garden and Beacon Hill

This is one of the most popular places. The Public Garden offers beautiful boats, winding bridges, and manicured gardens, while neighboring Beacon Hill offers cobblestone streets, gas lamps, and postcard-perfect brick houses.

I like to combine the two in one episode. We can start with soft, romantic photos by the lake, then wander a little to capture your family at the gates of Beacon Hill. I love it for a reason, and it works well in any season, especially in spring when the tulips are in bloom and fall when the leaves turn golden.

2. Boston Seaport and Harborwalk

If your family loves the water, the Seaport is calling your name. The Harborwalk offers open skies, long-distance cruises, and a modern Boston skyline as your backdrop. It has a fresh, airy look that captures beautifully no matter the time of year.

The space is also open and airy, which is great for families with kids who need space to run around before we ask them to be quiet for the camera. A little shake always makes for a better smile later.

3. Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Plain

The Arnold Arboretum is one of my favorites, and one of the places I recommend most often. This is a co-working space overseen by Harvard University, and it feels like stepping into your own private space without leaving the city.

Here’s why families love it:

I love bringing families here in the fall. The color in the Arboretum is amazing and gives your photos a warmth that lasts long after the leaves have fallen.

4. Castle Island, South Boston

Castle Island is a real local gem. You get harbor views, boardwalks, a historic fort, and a small stretch of beach, all in one place. It has a classic Boston flavor that is approachable and fun rather than overly polished, which is what many of my families are looking for.

Castle Island is an excellent choice for families looking for a relaxing, fun place to stay. With a dock, walkways, and open space, there are plenty of opportunities to let kids explore and walk in nature and take pictures in between.

5. Charles River Esplanade

The Esplanade runs along the Charles River and offers stunning views of the water, with views of Boston or Cambridge as your backdrop. It’s one of those places that are comfortable even on a busy day, with little things along the way where we can find a quiet moment.

This is a good choice if your family likes to stay together. We can capture a playful moment, a walk down the street, or a quiet moment sitting on the grass with the river behind you.

6. Boston Common

Boston Common is the oldest public park in the world, and it still has a lot of charm today. Between the Frog Pond, the tree canopy, and the famous Soldiers and Sailors monument, there’s a lot of beautiful scenery packed into one park.

I love this place for families who want a great downtown Boston feel without leaving the city center. In the winter, if your family likes to play sports, Frog Pond turns into ice and makes for the sweetest seasonal photos.

7. Larz Anderson Park, Brookline

Larz Anderson Park is a hidden gem on the outskirts of the city, and it happens to be one of the highest places in Brookline, which means a beautiful view of the Boston skyline in the distance. The surrounding mountains, the pond, and the mix of open grass and tree lines give us many options in one trip.

This park tends to be quieter than some of Boston’s more popular spots, making it a good choice if your family likes a relaxing, uncrowded place to spend your time.

8. Crane Beach, Ipswich

For families looking for a picture of a New England beach, Crane Beach is worth a short drive north of the city. Managed by the Trustees of Reservations, this beach is known for its soft sand dunes and a long, sweeping beach that makes for some of the best photos you can’t get in town.

9. Nahant Beach

Nahant Beach is also a favorite for families who love the beach but want something closer to the city than Crane Beach. They offer long sands along with pebbles that add texture and interest to your photos. There is a wonderful mix of open shots of the beach and some of the intimate ones, which are far away among the rocks.

This is a great option for families who want to feel the beach but still have a busy schedule, as it is easily accessible from most parts of Greater Boston.

10. South End Brownstone Streets

Finally, the South End offers some of the most beautiful streets in the entire city. Think wooden blocks, beautiful front doors, wrought iron, and beautiful brownstone architecture. It has a warm, intimate feel that works wonderfully for families who want an urban, refined look to their photos.

I like to bring families here at dawn or dusk when the streets are quiet and the golden light shines beautifully on the brick walls.

How I Help You Choose the Right Location

With so many great options around Boston, I know it can be overwhelming to choose for yourself. That’s where I come in! When discussing planning, I ask you what your family likes to do together. Do you like to collect shells on the beach? Do you take weekend walks through the Arboretum? Is there a park near your house that seems like part of your story? Those little details often point us in the right direction.

If nothing comes to mind right away, don’t worry at all. I’m always happy to make suggestions based on the weather, the light, and your mood. My goal is always the same, to help you feel comfortable and happy, because that’s where real, beautiful photos happen.

I’m giving it all! Many families choose home discussions because they are more comfortable and discuss their daily life. Some like the outdoor areas they like around Boston.
