When it’s cold and gray outside, home improvement can be fun. Whether you have toddlers, preschoolers, or homeschoolers this winter, this simple activity is a great way to promote creativity, motor skills, and coordination, without too much distraction.
Here are three winter-themed crafts that are easy, inexpensive, and perfect for a January afternoon.
1. Paper Plate Snowflakes
Fold the paper plate in half, then again in sections. Help your child to skip small objects or shapes around the edges (like cutting out snowflakes). When he opens it, it reveals a beautiful snow! Let them decorate with glitter glue, crayons, or stickers.
Helpful Hint: Talk about how no two snowflakes are alike – just like the kids!
2. Penguin Footprint Art
Non-toxic black and white paint
Orange construction paper
Googly eyes (or draw them)
Paper or canvas
Paint the bottom of your child’s foot with black paint and press lightly on the paper. When dry, paint the belly white in the middle. Cut out the beak and feet of the orange, and glue it on. Add googly eyes or draw them with a marker to complete the penguin’s face.
Best for: Keepsakes you’ll keep forever, especially for baby’s winter.
3. Cotton Ball Snowman Collage
Let your child sew three large balls of cotton on colored paper to make a snowman. Add the eyes, carrot nose, arms, and scarf using markers or paper cutters. This is a great mental activity for little hands.
Bonus idea: Turn it into a grandma card!
Be Free, Be Creative
Drawing is not only fun, it helps children explore shapes, colors, and designs while building confidence and imagination. Plus, these moments at the table together become winter memories that both of you can enjoy.
