There was a belief that if you want newborn photos you should photograph your baby in the first days or weeks of life, but nowadays, more and more parents are choosing to wait until their baby is 2-3 months old and honestly I think it’s a beautiful part to capture.
While sleeping, curled-up pictures are cute, there’s something special about taking pictures of a baby when they’re awake and socializing. At 2-3 months, your baby is changing almost every day. They will begin to notice the world around them, make eye contact, respond to your voice and sometimes, give you that first beautiful smile.
These moments are worth recording.
You didn’t miss the newborn stage
One of the biggest things I hear from parents is, I wish we could have photographed them as babies, but the first few weeks were very blurry.
The good news is, you didn’t miss your chance.
Photography for 2-3 month olds can be beneficial as part of the traditional newborn routine. In fact, for some families, waiting a little longer is more comfortable. You have settled into life with your new baby. You can be confident as a parent and your child is starting to develop their personality and that’s what we want to capture.
That beautiful smile
At this age, babies are starting to express more. You can smile a little when Mom or Dad is talking to them, look curiously when they see what is going on around them, or the good times when they seem to be fascinated by their hands.
This doesn’t mean the moments you’ll see in traditional baby photos, it’s the real interactions between your baby and the people they love the most and that’s what I love about Lifestyle Baby Photography.
A more interactive child drawing session
At 2-3 months, your baby is usually very alert during learning.
This means we can capture more of these beautiful little sounds and patterns.
We can explain:
-
Your baby’s first smile
-
Their beautiful eyes
-
Small hands and feet
-
Mother and child hugging
-
Father-son interaction
-
Siblings are meeting and playing with a child
-
Your baby is being held and comforted
-
Information you don’t want to forget
-
Those funny words and personalities are coming out
There is no need for your child to sleep the whole time or be quiet, we just follow their lead.
Your child doesn’t have to “do it”
One of the things I love most about taking pictures is that your child doesn’t have to do anything.
If they want to get married, we embrace them.
If they need food, we stop to eat.
If they don’t settle, we retire.
If they are awake and curious about anything, we record this too!
There is no pressure to create a “perfect” image.
Instead, this section is about writing this cute little guy as he is at this point.
2-3 months is a temporary phase
The newborn stage can feel like an eternity when you’re up in the middle of the night, but suddenly your little one is changing.
Their face is starting to show. Their little body is moving. They are showing their hands. They are looking straight at you. Before you know it, they’re rolling over, sitting up and finally crawling. That’s why I like to photograph babies when they are 2-3 months old. They are no longer new, but they are still very young. They are starting to show you who they are and those memories are precious.
There really isn’t a “perfect” generation.
Whether you choose to photograph your baby when they are a few days old, a few weeks old or 2-3 months old, there is no right or wrong time. Each section has something different to offer. If you’ve waited until your child is a little older, don’t feel like you’ve missed out. You didn’t. You are just capturing another chapter of your child’s story and one day when you look at the pictures, you will be thankful that you captured the little hands, the curious eyes, the first smile and how well your baby fit in your arms.
