As a Newborn Care Professional, using the 4 B’s of Newborns will be very helpful when sleep training your client’s baby. But what are the 4 B’s for Newborns, and why do they work?
The 4 B’s for Newborns and Why They Work
Newborn babies are magic. One of the best things about being an Infant Care Professional is being able to spend a lot of time cuddling and nurturing a new baby.
But babies need structure and routine just as much as they need discipline. One of the most important aspects of your work is helping to establish good practices for parents and their newborns. And the best way to establish a good sleep habit is the 4 B’s for newborns.
What are the 4 B’s for Babies?
The 4 B’s stand for Bath, Book, Bottle or Breast, and Bed. When used together, they provide a valuable practice for informing your client’s infant that it is time to sleep.
- Bathing – Bathing in warm water is relaxing for people of all ages. Starting a baby’s bedtime routine with a warm bath makes the baby feel nurtured and comforted, and promotes sleep. The purpose of this bath is relaxation and not hygiene, so it is better to leave soap, especially if the baby has dry skin.
- Book – Once the baby is up, dry, and adjusted to sleep, put the baby to bed for a count of time. One or three age appropriate books are recommended. Even before a baby understands spoken words, the sound of your voice is another important sign that it’s time to sleep.
- Bottle or Chest – After (or during) reading, give the baby time to sleep with a bottle or a breast. Even if the baby ate an hour ago, feeding at bedtime is a strong signal that it is time for sleep and the baby can “climb up.” In fact, newborn babies often fall asleep while feeding.
- Bed – Place a sleeping child in their bed in a dark room. Sit for a few minutes, if necessary, quietly comforting the baby while he sleeps.
It may take some time to get used to it. But with practice and patience, you will soon find that your client’s newborn is drifting off to sleep easily every evening.
Why Shortcuts Work
Children thrive when they do things in a normal way. Predictability and structure provide them with happiness and security. Babies are also just born. A regular bedtime routine will keep your baby happy. It signals to their mind that it is time to relax and prepare for sleep. They also tell their body that it is time to release hormones that induce sleep.
Helpful Tips for a Peaceful Sleep
When you start using the 4 B’s for Newborns as a sleep routine, it’s important to keep these tips in mind.
- Start Quick Actions – If you start following the same steps every night when preparing the baby for sleep, the baby will respond quickly
- Put Baby to Sleep When He Sleeps – Make sure the baby is sleeping in bed. If the baby is too awake or restless, he may become depressed and cry. The habit of crying and stress during sleep can lead to sleep problems, very different from what you are looking to achieve.
- Create a Peaceful Place – When guiding your client’s baby to sleep, make sure your environment is calm, restful, and sleepy. White noise or soft, quiet music, a dark room, and soothing sounds all help in providing a peaceful environment.
- Be Consistent – Establishing a bedtime routine requires consistency and patience. It may take time for a baby to catch on. Even if the routine seems stable, there will be nights when things don’t go well. Don’t lose faith and don’t lose heart.
Teaching newborns in your arms to sleep well is an important part of your job as a Newborn Care Professional. By using the 4 B’s for Newborns, you’ll give little ones and their parents all the tools they need to have the happiest sleep time of a lifetime.
