– Hello, I’m Dana. Do you know what the most important, number one, most searched question on the internet is?
When will my baby sleep through the night?
Hands down the most searched word on the internet for new parents and I wish I could give you a definitive answer.
I wish I could say that, by six months, at this weight, your child will suddenly start to sleep on a glorious night.
Unfortunately, I can’t say and no one can say that. Your doctor won’t say that, your pediatrician, your parent, your lactation consultant. No one can give you that answer because it is very unique for each child but I can give you some things that you should put in place to make sure that this happens as quickly as possible.
The most important thing to do as a parent is to make sure that your child knows how to sleep on his own. That’s the secret to a good sleeper, independent sleep skills.
So what do I mean by this? Well, it means exactly what it sounds like.
When you take a baby, you do a little routine with him before he goes to sleep, you put him in the crib while he is awake and he starts to sleep peacefully by himself.
That sounds like magic, right? That doesn’t even sound possible to some of you I would imagine but it is possible. It is absolutely possible. I mean, sleep is a natural necessity. We all have to do it but the reason we don’t sleep well is because we integrate all kinds of extras into our sleep routines and many babies include extras that look like breastfeeding to sleep, bottle feeding to sleep, rocking to sleep, rocking to sleep, wearing baby clothes to sleep.
All of these are what we call sleeping aids. It is the sleeping group that without them makes the whole situation more difficult for your child. So if you have solved the problem then the good news is that your child has a very good chance of starting to sleep through the night, naturally without much extra work on your part.
When they are ready to eliminate night feeding, their weight is good and everything is good in that department, they start sleeping through the night or close to it.
Now, if you’re wondering, I have all kinds of tools, that’s why my baby still isn’t sleeping so I recommend you get the Sleep Sense Program. You have several options on how to deal with this issue but the good news is that you can teach a child to sleep on their own without a lot of fuss and that’s what people always worry about, fuss.
There can be a conflict to begin with, right? It is difficult to change our sleeping habits. This is just a given but as they develop their skills, they become more sleepy, bedtime is no longer a problem, it starts going to bedtime to make this easier.
So it is very successful in the end and you will have a child who can sleep through the night without needing much help from you, without needing much attention from you and this can happen soon.
Thank you so much for watching today. Sleep well.
