Tips to help you prepare for your new baby – Karen Kimmins Newborn Photography

📸 Here are some tips to help you get your big brother ready to steal the show with gusto, smiles and fun chaos 😅 🤣

1️⃣ CREATE HAPPINESS – Talk to your child about the upcoming photo, talk about how good it will be for both of them to get a photo. Make them happy and look forward to the day!

2️⃣ SHOW THEM PICTURES – Show them pictures of other kids doing brother drawings from my website (this page is a good start but there are more in my big pictures here ). Have a game of watching the big brothers and sisters as the pictures go by and what are they doing – eyes closed, smiling at the camera or kissing their new baby? Make them think about these pictures. Show them how happy and proud the girls and boys look & how happy YOU are to get the same picture to hang on the walls in your home. It’s their time to shine next time!

3️⃣ STAY ALL OF YOU – Take time to be gentle with the child. You may also try putting them to sleep on their back with the baby in their arms under close supervision.

4️⃣ SHARE MY NAME – Talk about who I am, along with my name and how good a lady I am before starting the session (I’m the best Karen apart from the meme!! 😄) this will help create awareness and help them feel comfortable knowing that a friendly lady is behind the camera. (Here are my mugshots to help them get to know me better!) Let them know I’m here to capture special family moments and help them feel comfortable and happy.

5️⃣ Encourage QUESTIONS – Let your big brother ask you questions about taking pictures. Answering their curiosity can help reduce any uncertainty they may have. The more they know, the better they feel.

6️⃣ SHARE SPECIAL WORK – Share a story or memory with a picture of when you were a little baby. Remind them of how adorable and loved they were, this helps create a connection between their childhood and the new baby.

7️⃣ BE A LEADER – Let them say a different way they can put their hands or a funny face they can draw when we find a cute person who is smiling, we can’t use this picture, but it makes them feel empowered and involved.

8️⃣ BRING BACK THEIR FAVORITE TOY – Invite your child to bring their favorite toy or teddy bear. It can act as a comforting factor and help them relax, bringing awareness to the studio. As a treat for them, I can take a picture of their favorite teddy next to their new brother or sister before their turn. I will share with them behind my camera to show them a fun picture! It also adds an extra touch of fun and involvement, making the event memorable and fun for your child!

9️⃣ SNACK ATTACK – Bring your favorite snacks (don’t mess with the face please or bring wet wipes!) These can be small rewards for their cooperation. A little bit of deliciousness never hurt anyone, right?!

🔟 PRAISE AND PATIENCE– For all pictures give lots of praise. Gentle and positive encouragement goes a long way to making this fun for them! If your child needs a break or doesn’t feel the vibration of the image at that time, that’s fine, we can try again at a later time or try something else clearly. Sometimes an unplanned shot is very inspiring.
